Program: Quilting with Liberty Fabrics by Jenni Smith

Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at 7:00 PM via Zoom

jenni-smith-sews.png

Our June speaker was Annie Smith from Annie Smith Designs. She took us on a journey through the development of tools we could not “live” without – do you even remember life before the rotary cutter?

For her class, Annie taught us that applique is not a bad word and showed us tips and tricks for inside curves, outside curves, and points as we worked on a project she created just for us.

This month, Jenni Smith will be joining us from her home in the UK. She will be talking about her new book, Quilting with Liberty Fabrics. The book is available through Amazon as well as Morris Textiles, if you are interested in a copy for yourself.

In August we have Veruschka Zarate from Pride and Joy quilting – check out her website with her AMAZING foundation paper pieced works of art.

In September, we get ready for the SHOW!

We take a break on workshops over the summer so you should have plenty of time to finish your show quilts and make lots of items for the Boutique and Silent Auction!

Christine’s Chatter

This year is really flying by, isn’t it? I’m sitting in my kitchen enjoying my first long vacation in almost two years. I have much to be thankful for: my family is fully vaccinated, none of them contracted COVID in the past 15 months, they are all gainfully employed, and we are all together after an 8-month separation. My granddaughter knows me in 3-D (all contact has been on Facetime since October). Also, after receiving long overdue rain, the grass is starting to green up again and my flowers are looking great. As we celebrate our country’s birthday, I am so grateful for the freedoms in this land. Are there things you are thankful for at this halfway point of 2021?

This is a show year for our guild and if you are like me, you are trying to finish up quilts for the July 13th submission date. I’m looking forward to a great show as I know most of you have used social isolation to spend time with your favorite hobby. I expect a full show with many beautiful quarantine quilts. I am not able to finish all that I planned to do. That means I will have several items for the next show in 2023. Please find ways to help with the show by signing up for a volunteer time slot, making items for the Silent Auction and Boutique and supporting the committee in all of their efforts. It takes “all hands on deck” to make a successful show and I trust we will have the support of the entire membership.

I was happy to announce at our June membership meeting that we are able to meet in person with several guidelines in place. I’d love to see our guild in 3-D. We always have a great time together.

Wishing you cool breezes,

Christine Tindell, President

Life after Quarantine, Meeting Virtually and In Person

I have been in communication with a member of the Trustee Board at Grace United Methodist Church where we meet. She was very happy to let me know that the church opened up to outside groups in May.

Their rules are as follows:

  1. All attendees are to sign up in the foyer.

  2. Wear a mask while in the building if you are not fully vaccinated.

  3. Refrain from eating or drinking while in the building.

Our board met shortly after I received this announcement to work out the details of HOW we would meet. As a group, we came to realize that there are several obstacles to meeting live in person every third Tuesday night. We have always had challenges with connecting to the internet in our space, and all of the speakers until March 2022 have been contracted to present virtually. While our biggest obstacle is technical, even if we have the proper tech components, there could be other issues related to internet broadcasting for our speakers.

Therefore, we formed a committee consisting of Christine, Julie Milne, Kate Brennan, Kearstie Grenier, Marti Austin, Enid Mattimiro, and Margaret Martin. If you have a desire to be on this committee, please contact Christine through the website.

The following are the recommendations of this committee:

Virtual meetings via Zoom:
6:30 pm - social time, 7:00 pm - meeting begins
(3rd Tuesday of the month)

July 20
August 17
October 19
November 16

The church has agreed to let us use their facilities on the fourth Tuesday of the month for a Sit ‘N Sew. The first meeting was June 22 and even though there were only 11 people there, we think it will catch on. You can bring your sewing machines, or do handwork. Ironing boards will not be available. If you have any questions, contact Barbara Schober.

In-person meetings for the Sit ‘N Sew:
Start at 6:30 pm

July 27
August 24
October 26

We will skip November as it is only two days before Thanksgiving.

There’s still more good news! We will meet in person September 21st, 2021 at the church as it is our Quilt Show prep meeting. No Sit ‘N Sew in September.

We will also meet in person in December but instead of the third Tuesday, we will meet on the second Tuesday, December 14th, for our holiday celebration. I am hoping that in the next few months there will be a decision favoring us having a meal together. I will still be in touch with the church about that issue. No Sit ‘N Sew in December.

Please add these dates to your calendar. Looking forward to seeing each other live and in person.

Quilts from the Village Show 2021

Time is flying, I can’t believe it is July! In case you haven’t heard, ticket sales are going well. We sold a LOT at the Schaumburg show to many happy people, who were glad to be out of the house. So many stopped to share wonderful comments regarding our gorgeous “opportunity” quilt. Someone even said that ours was the most beautiful quilt at the show. We hope you have purchased your $25 worth and are encouraging your friends and family to buy. You can buy for others who may not want to go online by just entering their information on the site with their email and the numbers will be sent directly to them. They can just give you the money or a check. The best way is to use your smartphone and pay with your credit card. EASY! See Raffle Tickets article below for more details.

Plans for the show are progressing per our timeline. We are excited to be able to have our show October 1 and 2. Spread the word to all you know. The new venue name is Canlan Sports Libertyville.

Barb Jolley and I are busy making things for the Silent Auction and the Boutique. Hopefully, you are also! If you need ideas for the Boutique, contact Judi Young, Laura Partridge or Barbara Peterson. Silent Auction items should be new and made with care.

I hope everyone is feeling more comfortable now that more things are opening. Very exciting to feel more normal about going to gatherings. The first time at the church to sew and talk was so nice. I hope more will come next month.

Entering Your Quilt in the Quilt Show

Quilt Show view.jpg

Time is running out to submit your quilts for the Quilt Show!

Quilts submissions are due July 13th!

All quilts to be hung in the show must be registered by midnight Tuesday, July 13th. Quilts of Valor that will not be hung have a deadline of August 24th.

As you register your quilts, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Only members whose dues have been paid may display quilts in the show.

  • Quilts to be hung must be finished and photographs submitted no later than July 20th. This includes the Art Quilt Challenge quilts. Follow the instructions in the email you receive when you register to submit the photos.

  • All quilts that are not part of the Art Quilt Challenge or a Quilt of Valor that won't be hung need a 4 in. sleeve. If your quilt is longer than 108 in. (9 ft.), you must place the sleeve so that the top of the sleeve is 108 in. from the bottom of the quilt. Check the Members' Show Info page for instructions on how to make a sleeve.

  • If you have a quilt in the show, you are required to volunteer to work at least two shifts. See Quilt Show Staffing article below for signup details.

We're looking forward to registering your beautiful quilts.

Registration is open now!

Enid Mattimiro and Kearstie Grenier, Cataloging Committee

Raffle Quilt Travel

We do not have as many opportunities to promote our raffle quilt as we have had in previous shows. We cannot travel to guild meetings as we have in the past since so many guilds are not meeting in person. One alternative is to take our quilt into the community and show it at Farmers’ Markets. We have scheduled showings of the quilt at the Libertyville Farmers’ Market on the following Thursdays: July 8, August 19, and September 9. It will be shown at the Grayslake Market on Wednesday, August 25.

There are Farmers’ Markets in other communities. If there is one in your town and you think it would be beneficial for us to bring the quilt there, please determine who the contact person is for the Market and forward that information to Dorothy Roderick to sell tickets in your community.

We have a continuing need to staff our booth; it is quite pleasant to sit at the market with this beautiful quilt and greet people. Come help give people the opportunity to buy raffle tickets for the quilt. Contact Dorothy Roderick to volunteer to travel with the quilt to local Farmers’ Markets.

Dorothy Roderick and Laurie Waldron, Quilt Travel Committee

Silent Auction at the Quilt Show

Silent Auction needs you!

Can You Help.png

We need at least 100 items to auction off. We are interested in small to large quilted items. Holiday themed items sell very well; Halloween and Christmas do the best.

Any questions contact Liz Greenhill or Donna Derstadt.

Boutique at the Quilt Show

Once everyone’s quilts are finished and entered in the 2021 Quilt Show, we hope everyone gets busy making things to donate and sell in the Boutique.

Seasonal holiday-themed coasters, pot holders, mug rugs, microwave bowl cozies, placemats, table runners, and ornaments are all good sellers.

You can use patterns you have or search Pinterest or YouTube for some new ideas and tutorials. Remember to give credit to the pattern maker if using someone else’s pattern.

All Boutique items should be turned in to Judi Young, Laura Partridge, or Barbara Peterson by the September 21 Guild Meeting so that we can price all of the items before the show.

Thank you for contributing to another successful Boutique!

Quilts of Valor

I have received four nomination forms so far for recipients of a Quilt of Valor at the October 2nd Quilt Show. There is still time for members to nominate a veteran and to enter a Quilt of Valor before the July 13th deadline. The nomination form is located on the Service page of the Village Quilters website. Recipients will be on a first come-first served basis, and will be limited to no more than ten. Any Quilt of Valor entered in the Show that is not awarded to a specific veteran will be donated to the Illinois Quilts of Valor Foundation.

Plans for the reception following the actual award ceremony are in the works and we anticipate a good time for everyone. Of course, the event will be dependent on COVID restrictions and mediations in place on October 2nd.

If you have any questions about Quilts of Valor, please feel free to contact me.

Cheryl Mercy, Quilts of Valor Chairperson

Raffle Tickets

Traditionally, in every quilt show year, all members were asked/begged/strong-armed to buy $25 worth of raffle tickets to sell (or keep).

While it may be more difficult to sell your tickets to co-workers and friends this year, we still encourage you to buy at least $25 worth of tickets. Doing so shows your support of our guild and honors the exquisite work done by our fellow members who created this year’s beautiful raffle quilt.

The process is easy. You will need your credit card.

  • On the Village Quilters Home page you will see a large green BUY RAFFLE TICKETS button. Select that button.

  • On the next page, select the Enter Now button, and enter how many tickets you want to buy.

  • Complete the form including your credit card information.

  • Select the blue Enter Now button.

  • You’re finished! You will receive an email with your raffle ticket numbers.

Thank you to those Members who have already supported our guild by buying raffle tickets!

Kathy Avellone, Raffle Tickets Chairperson

Quilt Show Staffing

We encourage everyone to volunteer for two time periods. If you are participating in the Boutique, you will also be expected to work one shift in the Boutique. If you are unsure of what is involved in any position, please contact Barbara Schober for more information.

Check the Members' Show Info page to sign up. Scroll down and you will see the section, "Sign Up to Volunteer at the Show", and a button that will take you directly to the SignUp website. We have a variety of jobs to be filled, and need all members to participate.

Barbara Schober, Staffing Chairperson

Quilt Show Set-up/Take-down

I am looking for five people to be team captains for set-up and take-down. These people must be experienced with our new hanging system, be able to read the hanging diagram, and confidently lead their team from start to finish. Please email or call me if you would be willing to fill one of these positions.

Thanks!

Sue Minster, SetUp Chairperson

Quilt Show Check-In/Check-Out

Check In/Check Out needs "runners", those energetic souls who carry the quilts from the Check-In desk to the location specified by the SetUp committee and reverse the process at the close of the show.

Please sign up – think of all the calories you will burn! Plus that, it’s fun!

Feather Schroeder, Check-In/Check-Out Chairperson

Quilt Appraisals at the Quilt Show

In June I entered five quilts in the show and am deciding which ones to get appraised. I hope many of you are considering getting one or two of your own quilts appraised, especially if you have never signed up before.

It’s a very interesting process, and you might be pleasantly surprised at the replacement value of your quilt(s). Sandy Schweitzer, AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser, will be appraising quilts at our quilt show. Appraisals take approximately thirty minutes and each appraisal is $60.00 (cash or check); Sandy also generously donates $5.00 from each appraisal back to our guild.

Please call or email me to sign up or to ask questions.

Judy Hillebrand, Appraisal Chairperson
