Program: Annie Smith - How Tech is Changing the Way We Quilt

Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 7:00 PM via Zoom

Annie Smith sample.jpg

Thank you to all who participated in Karen Miller’s Quilter’s Doodles class – it was so much fun and I look forward to seeing some great looking projects on the guild’s Facebook page!

Our June speaker is Annie Smith from Annie Smith Designs. She will be talking about how technology has invaded our sewing rooms and why that is not a bad thing. Annie’s class on Saturday, June 19 will be all about machine applique.

Applique is not a bad word and Annie is going to show us tips and tricks for inside curves, outside curves, and points as we work on a project she created JUST FOR US!

We will be using her book, The Ultimate Applique Guidebook available through Amazon or Annie’s site. Annie will have an optional kit available on her website shortly.

In July, Jenni Smith will be joining us from her home in the UK. She will be talking about her new book, Quilting with Liberty Fabrics. The book is available through Amazon as well as Morris Textiles, if you are interested in a copy for yourself.

We take a break on workshops over the summer so you should have plenty of time to finish your show quilts and make lots of items for the Boutique!

Christine’s Chatter

Welcome to beautiful June! I always look forward to warmer temperatures with more outside activities, although today (May 27th) doesn’t look like summer at all. As I write this, it is 48 degrees outside and raining! Even though it is cold, I am very thankful for the rain as we have been in a deep drought for quite some time. My garden is also very grateful.

I’ve heard great things about the workshop with Karen Miller of Redbird Quilt Co. The projects shown on the guild’s Facebook page are inspiring.

The deadline for submitting quilts for our show is looming on the horizon. I am taking stock of what needs to be finished before July 13th and contemplating what I can make for the Silent Auction. I am waiting for inspiration for the Art Quilt Challenge. I drive by the Libertyville Sports Complex every day on my way to work and I am hopeful it will be full of activity soon.

Can you believe we have dealt with this pandemic for 15 months? I am working with the church regarding when we will be able meet in person again. I hope to have an announcement at our June membership meeting, which will continue to be on Zoom.

If you haven’t renewed your membership, please do so and if you are missing your friends at our virtual meetings, remind them to pay their dues and join us again.

I’m looking forward to a long visit with our whole family at the end of June. This grandma misses her Dorothy as we haven’t seen our family since October.

Have a wonderful June.

Service Projects

QUILT OF VALOR Block of the Month

Congratulations on finishing all 20 of your blocks! The only thing left to do is sew them together, then quilt and bind. If you have not started a Quilt of Valor, I hope you consider the “Flying Flags” quilt pattern. It is a simple option.

Please see below for details on submitting a Quilt of Valor for the quilt show.

Hopes and Dreams Challenge

A big THANK YOU to all the members who have made quilts, making the Hopes and Dreams service project a success. Seventy-six beautiful quilts were donated! An excerpt from a note written by an ALS patient states, “When our bodies start to waste away, we get cold so easily. To be covered with a warm work of love is priceless. Thank you for sewing such love, care, and support to those of us who are living with this beast”.

Hopes and Dreams will be accepting quilts for the challenge until July 31st. If you would still like to mail a quilt, please contact me for the information.

More information can be found on the Village Quilters Service page.

Boutique Virtual Sew-In on June 5

All members are invited to join our first Virtual Boutique Sew-In this Saturday, June 5 from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM, hosted by Barbara Schober.

Judi Young, Laura Partridge, and Barbara Peterson will do a Show & Tell of items to make for the Boutique as well as live demos. You are free to use your own patterns for potholders, mug rugs, microwavable bowl caddies, coasters, placemats, simple table runners, or ornaments.

Pinterest and YouTube are great resources!

The Zoom link can be found in the Members Only section of the Village Quilters website and on the Village Quilters (Members Only) Facebook page. We hope to see you there!

Quilts from the Village Show 2021

Things are definitely improving since so many have received the vaccine! Just think about how it was just a few months ago. This makes the outlook for our show even better. It will be interesting to see how things are done at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Schaumburg this week. Many of us are working at that show, selling tickets for the raffle quilt, and helping with various jobs during their show.

Speaking of tickets, I hope you have had a chance to purchase your tickets through our Village Quilters (Members Only) Facebook page or our Home page. It is very easy to do, just follow the prompts and you will receive an email with all your numbers. Remember, we are each asked to buy $25 worth of tickets for every show. Please do, if you are able. It is a beautiful quilt as usual! Tell your friends and family to buy tickets.

I have been busy working on items for the Boutique and Silent Auction. There will be a Zoom sew-in for working on items together and to get ideas for your projects on June 5th. Get those ideas flowing!

We have wonderful news! We have a contract and I am in the process of signing it today! The show must go on!

Entering Your Quilt in the Quilt Show

The time is NOW… to submit your quilts for the Quilt Show!

Quilts are due July 13th!

All quilts to be hung in the show must be registered by midnight Tuesday, July 13th. Quilts of Valor that will not be hung have a deadline of August 24th.

As you register your quilts, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Only members whose dues have been paid may display quilts in the show.

  • Quilts to be hung must be finished and photographs submitted no later than July 20th. This includes the Art Quilt Challenge quilts. Follow the instructions in the email you receive when you register to submit the photos.

  • All quilts that are not part of the Art Quilt Challenge or a Quilt of Valor that won't be hung need a 4" sleeve. If your quilt is longer than 108" (9 ft.), you must place the sleeve so that the top of the sleeve is 108" from the bottom of the quilt. Check the Members' Show Info page for instructions on how to make a sleeve.

  • If you have a quilt in the show, you are required to volunteer to work at least two shifts. See Quilt Show Staffing article below for signup details.

We're looking forward to registering your beautiful quilts.

Registration is open now!

Enid Mattimiro and Kearstie Grenier, Cataloging Committee

Raffle Quilt Travel

Although our Raffle Quilt won't be traveling far and wide this summer, it will make several appearances. We are scheduled for three or four days at the Libertyville Farmers' Market and at several other venues. If you’re inclined to join us to sell raffle tickets and promote the Quilt Show, contact Dorothy Roderick for scheduling.

Dorothy Roderick and Laurie Waldron, Quilt Travel Committee

Boutique at the Quilt Show

The Boutique invites members to sell their original quilted items in the 2021 Quilt Show Boutique as Member-Vendors. Member-Vendors have always made the Boutique special and have been quite profitable for those members who have participated – 85% of each sale goes to the member, while 15% goes to the Guild.

If you are interested in being a Member-Vendor or knowing more about this opportunity, contact Judi Young, Laura Partridge, or Barbara Peterson.

Art Quilt Challenge – Our Lives Are Woven Together

Woven Quiltsbook2.jpg

For those who haven’t started your Art Quilt Challenge entry, please check out the new post under Challenges in the Members tab. See examples of what does and doesn’t meet the definition of woven fabric.

If you are looking for some inspiration, Simply Stunning Woven Quilts is available on Amazon. Check to see if your library has a copy.

Quilt Show Staffing

I am extremely pleased to note that members have begun to use the SignUp.com website to select their volunteer positions and time periods. We encourage everyone to volunteer for two time periods. If you are participating in the Boutique, you will also be expected to work one shift in the Boutique. There are positions that are active, like white-gloving, and others that are sedentary, like Admissions and Raffle Quilt Sales. If you are unsure of what is involved in any position, please contact Barbara Schober for more information.

Check the Members' Show Info page to sign up. Choose the button with a large check mark “Choose a spot on SignUp”.

Barbara Schober, Staffing Chairperson

Quilt Appraisals at the Quilt Show

As you are hard at work finishing your quilts for our quilt show, please consider signing up for a quilt appraisal. Sandy Schweitzer, AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser, will be appraising quilts during our show in October. Appraisals take approximately thirty minutes and each appraisal is $60.00 (cash or check); Sandy also donates $5.00 from each appraisal back to our guild.

Quilts are appraised for one of three reasons: insurance (replacement value); fair market (comparable sales value); and donation (comparable sales value). Please contact me to sign up for an appraisal.

Judy Hillebrand, Appraisal Chairperson
