Virtual Speaker: Sarah Evans – Rita’s Quilt

Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at 7:00 PM via Zoom

Ritas quilt.jpg

Sarah Evans will be our guest speaker at our October 20th meeting. She is doing a lecture on Rita’s Quilt. This is a quilt project that had a humble beginning and turned into a project that a whole community of quilters embraced with dedication and passion. We are very excited that Sarah will be sharing this inspiring story with us. There will not be a workshop in October.

We have to make a change for our November schedule. Sarah Thomas is no longer able to lead our workshop and give the lecture at our November meeting.

We have a new program planned for November. Our speaker and workshop leader will be HollyAnne Knight of String & Story. We think that everyone will enjoy her enthusiasm. HollyAnne will be lecturing on Free Motion quilting and her workshop will be Intro Into Free Motion Quilting. She is very active on social media teaching all aspects of quilting.

We had an excellent workshop in September. It was done via Zoom and everyone had an opportunity to share their progress with each other and interact with the instructor. We learned a new technique for quilt as you go quilting. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the workshop. This is a plug for our upcoming workshops.

We have reduced the registration fee for our upcoming three workshops to $35.00 each. Our November workshop will be held on Wednesday the 18th. In January the workshop will be offered over two evenings, the 21st and 25th. February’s workshop is scheduled for Saturday the 20th. We are taking advantage of our workshops being held virtually and trying other times to see if this will help those who work and cannot easily attend a daytime workshop. Please check out these workshops on our website and sign up. Our September workshop was so much fun and we hope that more members will participate.

PLEASE NOTE: if an email is not sent before the meeting, the Zoom meeting information can be found on the Village Quilters Members Only page.

Christine’s Chatter

President Christine.jpg

We are now officially moving into the fall season. As the leaves change colors, the wind blows a bit cooler, and our t-shirts and shorts transition to sweatshirts and pants, I am reminded that our change in seasons is an opportunity to celebrate what has been, and what is to come. As we look forward to Halloween and pumpkin picking, Thanksgiving and football games, and raking those piles of leaves in the backyard, I hope you will join me in recognizing all the blessings we have in our lives and take a moment to express your love and gratitude to those closest to you.

I am very grateful for the community of quilters that I am associated with and the contributions you all have made to the community, to frontline workers and to charity. I’m sure many of you are working on Christmas gifts as it is only two months away! Where has the time gone?

We will continue to meet on Zoom for our monthly meetings until the restriction of “no more than 50 people” has been lifted. We have an active membership of a little under 100 and we don’t want to take the risk that everyone will show up at a meeting at the church. We don’t want to turn anyone away.

Our family is getting together next week to celebrate our granddaughter’s baptism and birthday. Yes, she is already one year old. We are hoping to do some “fall” things while together.

The next workshop will be in November and from what I’ve seen on the Facebook page, the September workshop was a hit for those that attended virtually. I am so grateful to live in a time that we can still get together, even if it’s not in person. Have a wonderful October and don’t let the goblins get you!

Hope to see you all soon,
Christine Tindell, President

Quilt of Valor Block of the Month

Continue with making two blocks of your choice for the “Flying Flags” quilt. The suggested quilt block this month for the star portion of the block is the Ohio Star, a 6” finished block.

More information can be found on the Village Quilters Service page.

Hopes and Dreams

The Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge was started by Kathy Thompson, owner of Quilters Dream Batting, when her son was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 32. ALS is a devastating disease that leaves a person’s body paralyzed while their mind and spirit are alert and active. By participating in the challenge, you help raise awareness about ALS, bring warmth and hope to the lives of ALS patients, and also help raise much needed funds for research.

Have you started your quilt? Since the current challenge ends on July 31, 2021, the last day for turning in your quilts will be the June 2021 guild meeting

Thank you for all your donations!

Quilts from the Village Show 2021

Hello everyone! Hope all is well with you and all your projects are going well. I can't imagine not having sewing/quilting to help the time pass. And the Village Quilters (Members Only) Facebook site to keep us connected!

Barb and I really have nothing new to post in the newsletter this month, but if you have anything that you might want to ask of or inform the members, please post your article to Laura Partridge, our newsletter editor. Things to consider might be: Silent Auction or Boutique items, Art Quilt Challenge project, or additional help with your position.

Thanks to all of you for stepping up to make our show a success.

Friendship Committee

Barbara Schober has taken the responsibility for the Friendship position. If you know of a member who may need cheering up, has been ill, or had a bereavement, please let her know. Barbara will send a card to the member on behalf of the guild.

Birthday Blocks

Birthday-Block-tulip-rev.jpg

No October birthdays, but we have a few in November. There are several ideas for setting the blocks in the book Log Cabin Flower Quilts by Nancy Brenan Daniel from the American School of Needlework. Hope everybody is enjoying the project.

Remember, all you quilters, that the sacred quarter inch seam is of paramount importance. Otherwise, the block will be weakly constructed and/or come out the wrong size. Before giving the block to the recipient, make sure that it measures 8 1/2" according to the instructions. Just be extra careful when measuring, cutting, and seaming your block, and the recipient will be grateful when she sews her blocks together. Happy Sewing!
