December 2015

December Social Hosted by Steeple Stitchers
December 15, 6:30pm - 9:00pm (Note: Early Start!)

Plans are underway for our 2015 holiday party, hosted this year by the Steeple Stitchers bee. It will be held in Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Bluff, our usual meeting place, at 6:30 Tuesday, December 15. Note the early start!

Cost per person is $10, payable to Alice Hutchinson, 108 Welwyn Street, Lake Bluff, IL 60044, by December 12. Many people who were at the November meeting already paid.

This will be a catered dinner with desserts contributed by our Village Quilters members. If you are able to bring a dessert or some cookies, please let Edythe Hirasawa know. Beverages and paper goods will be provided.

Items that remain from the Quilt Show Boutique will be on sale at a discount. These would make excellent holiday gifts and are a real bargain. Please see the story later in the newsletter for more information.

Some important notes:

  • There will be a voluntary gift exchange. Gifts should be under $10 or homemade. This is a voluntary activity; those who wish to participate must bring a gift, those who do not wish to participate will not bring a gift.
  • Please bring with you a pair of scissors suitable for cutting paper. There will be an activity involving paper cutting.

Please plan to join us for a fun evening of festivities, dinner, and holiday music. We promise that a good time will be had by all!

Village Quilters President’s Letter

Well, we have had our hard freeze and our first snow. The gardens are put to bed. Thanksgiving is over.  Our Hanukkah party was December 4 and now I am ready to quilt. What a cozy activity for this time of year.  I sit up in my studio—my favorite room in the house—with corner windows looking over our front yard. I can see the weather and the neighborhood activity. I listen to a good story or good music. And I enjoy quilting—one of my favorite activities.

At the top of my projects are the free motion sampler from Pat Delaney’s workshop and Storm at Sea from John Flynn’s workshop. I am looking forward to completing both of those relatively small quilts. It always feels good to finish something. And then there is the t-shirt quilt that is still in progress.

The December meeting promises to be as fun as always. Do come and visit with your fellow quilters. We have so little time to share good food and good conversation with our quilting buddies.

At this season I find myself counting all the things I am thankful for. I feel I am overflowing with blessings. My family—10 of us including children and grandchildren—my health, my growing quilting skills, my quilting friends, my sleeping garden, the colors, shapes and contrasts in the world, and many more. It’s corny, I know, but I recommend stopping for a minute to notice all the good in our world.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Happy Quilting,
Linda

(Note: Check out the links in the article to see photographs of the quilt.)

Susan Carlson's new collage quilt of epic proportions, "Crocodylus Smylus" is now on display in Wisconsin. It's a life-size crocodile—6 feet tall and 22 feet long! This is its debut, and you have until January 10 (2016) to see it at at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts as part of its exhibition "From Insects to Elephants".

There's a time-lapse video of the making of the quilt top available on YouTube: Introducing "Crocodylus Smylus", and more photos can be seen on the final "Croc Watch" update posted to Carlson's web site.
